What to Expect During a Home Remodel with a General Contractor

Planning a remodel is exciting, but if you’ve never worked with a general contractor before, it can also feel a little overwhelming. What’s the process like? Who’s responsible for what? How do you know the job will be done right?

At Blackhills Finish Carpentry, we’ve spent over 25 years managing remodeling projects throughout Hill City, Rapid City, and the Black Hills region. We believe the process matters just as much as the outcome, and we’re here to help you understand what to expect — from the first phone call to the final walkthrough.

Step 1 – The Initial Consultation

Every successful project begins with a conversation. When you reach out to us, we’ll schedule an on-site consultation to learn more about:

  • Your project goals
  • Your timeline and ideal start date
  • Budget range and material preferences
  • Any current issues with the space

We walk the site, take measurements, and answer your questions. Then, we create a realistic game plan to bring your vision to life.

Step 2 – Estimate, Scope & Scheduling

After the initial meeting, we’ll send over a detailed estimate outlining the scope of work, materials, labor, and a projected timeline. We don’t do vague quotes — we give you a clear breakdown of what’s included.

Once approved, we lock in your place on the schedule and begin preparing materials and permits (if needed). Transparency is key. We’ll let you know:

  • When work will start
  • What days we’ll be on-site
  • When materials will be delivered

What you need to do to prepare (if anything)

Step 3 – Demolition & Prep Work

If your remodel includes removing old cabinets, flooring, walls, or fixtures, we’ll handle demo with care and efficiency. We protect surrounding areas, remove debris, and prepare the space for the next phase.

We never leave a mess, and we keep job sites as clean and organized as possible throughout the process.

Step 4 – Build Phase

This is where the transformation happens. Depending on your project, this phase may include:

  • Framing and wall modifications
  • Electrical or plumbing work (managed by licensed subcontractors)
  • Flooring installation
  • Cabinetry, trim, and built-in construction
  • Painting and finish work

As your general contractor, we coordinate all trades, ensure the work meets our standards, and keep the job progressing on schedule.

You’ll get regular updates and check-ins, so you’re never left in the dark.

Step 5 – Final Touches & Walkthrough

Once the build is complete, we take care of any punch list items, small adjustments, or refinements that bring everything to 100%. Then, we schedule a final walkthrough with you to review the results and ensure you're fully satisfied.

We don’t consider the job done until you’re happy.

The Blackhills Difference

Homeowners choose Blackhills Finish Carpentry not just for what we build, but for how we build it.
